AIM:
To determine the formula of hydrated copper(II)sulphate.
APPARATUS
The box includes:
- Powdered copper(II)sulphate
- Spatula
- Crucible
- Mass meter
- Gas Stove and Gas fuel cartridge
- Tongs
- Gauze Wire
- Matches or gas lighter
METHOD:
- Use a scale or balance to determine the mass of the crucible – record the mass.
- Put approximately three spatulas full of CuSO4-powder in the crucible and determine the mass of the crucible and powder – record the mass.
- Light the gas burner place the wire gauze over it.
- Heat the crucible and its content gently over a low flame until the powder turns completely white.
- Use the tongs to remove the crucible.
- Allow the crucible to cool down and determine the mass of the crucible and anhydrous CuSO4 – record the mass.
PRECAUTION:
- Treat all chemicals as if they are poisonous – do not taste, smell or touch with bare hands.
- Take care when heating the crucible with the flame from the Bunsen burner.
- Handle hot crucible with safety tongs.
- In case of:
Eye contact: Rinse for 10 min under running water.
Skin Contact: Rinse, once rash appear seek medical attention.
Inhalation and ingestion: Seek medical attention.
Spillage: Using protective clothing to collect and dispose of.
