To determine the formula of hydrated copper(II)sulphate.

APPARATUS

The box includes:

  • Powdered copper(II)sulphate
  • Spatula
  • Crucible
  • Mass meter
  • Gas Stove and Gas fuel cartridge
  • Tongs
  • Gauze Wire
  • Matches or gas lighter

METHOD:

  1. Use a scale or balance to determine the mass of the crucible – record the mass.
  2. Put approximately three spatulas full of CuSO4-powder in the crucible and determine the mass of the crucible and powder – record the mass.
  3. Light the gas burner place the wire gauze over it.
  4. Heat the crucible and its content gently over a low flame until the powder turns completely white.
  5. Use the tongs to remove the crucible.
  6. Allow the crucible to cool down and determine the mass of the crucible and anhydrous CuSO4 – record the mass.

PRECAUTION:

  • Treat all chemicals as if they are poisonous – do not taste, smell or touch with bare hands.
  • Take care when heating the crucible with the flame from the Bunsen burner.
