In schools, Visking tubing (also known as dialysis tubing) is primarily used in biology experiments to act as a model for a partially permeable (or selectively permeable) membrane, such as a cell membrane or the lining of the small intestine. 

It is commonly used in biology experiments to demonstrate diffusion and osmosis because its small pores allow small molecules like water and glucose to pass through, while blocking larger molecules such as starch.

Its main applications in a school context are:

  • Demonstrating Osmosis: Visking tubing is used to show how water moves by osmosis from an area of high water potential (dilute solution) to an area of low water potential (concentrated solution) across a partially permeable membrane.
    • Experiment Example: A length of tubing filled with a concentrated sugar solution (e.g., sucrose) is sealed and placed in a beaker of distilled water. Water enters the tubing, causing it to swell and gain mass, demonstrating the movement of water across the membrane.
  • Demonstrating Diffusion: Experiments use the tubing to illustrate how small molecules can pass through the membrane's pores by diffusion, while larger molecules cannot.
    • Experiment Example: A mixture of glucose (small molecule) and starch (large molecule) solution is placed inside the tubing, which is then submerged in a beaker of water. After a period, the water outside the tubing is tested:
      • Glucose is detected in the outside water, having diffused out through the pores.
      • Starch is not detected outside, as its molecules are too large to pass through the membrane.
  • Modelling the Human Gut/Absorption: The diffusion experiment (described above) effectively models the process of absorption in the small intestine, where digested, small food molecules (like glucose) pass into the bloodstream, but large, undigested molecules (like starch) remain inside. 

In summary, Visking tubing is a vital, non-living teaching aid that helps students visually understand fundamental biological transport processes like osmosis and diffusion.
