A round-head brush suits beakers and flasks, while a slim, long brush suits test tubes and burettes with narrow openings.

A brush with frayed or flattened bristles cleans less effectively, so replace it rather than pushing through with a worn tool.

Scrubbing the inside of glassware that a rinse cannot reach. Test tubes, burettes, pipettes and narrow necked flasks all trap residue where water alone will not shift it, and anything left on the glass will skew your next result. The brush does the mechanical work and the detergent does the rest.

Match the brush diameter to the bore. A test tube brush is short with a soft tip so it does not chip the base. Burette and pipette brushes are long and thin to reach the full length. Beaker and cylinder brushes are wider and flatter for open vessels.

Warm water and a mild laboratory detergent handles most residue. Rinse with distilled water afterwards so tap minerals do not dry on the glass. Save the aggressive solvents for residue that genuinely will not shift, since repeated use attacks graduations and ground glass joints.

You can, but matching brush shape and size to the glassware gets a more thorough clean, especially for narrow tubes and burettes.

Replace it once bristles fray, flatten, or lose their shape, since a worn brush no longer scrubs effectively.
