What is a laboratory glass spreader?

A laboratory glass spreader, also known as an L-spreader or Drigalski spreader, is a bent borosilicate glass rod used to distribute bacterial and fungal suspensions evenly across agar plates. The L-shaped tip maintains consistent contact with the agar as the plate is rotated, producing uniform lawns or well-separated colonies. Glass spreaders are autoclavable, resistant to most sterilising agents, and can be flame-sterilised between uses at the bench. They are essential in microbiology for spread plate counts, pure culture isolation, antibiotic sensitivity testing, and any application requiring even distribution of a liquid inoculum across solid medium.
