Glass Volumetric Flasks

A volumetric flask measures one volume and nothing else. The single etched ring on the neck is the calibration mark, and the flask is only accurate when the bottom of the meniscus sits on that ring at 20 degrees Celsius. Fill past it and there is no way to correct the error except to start again.

Borosilicate glass is the default for making up standard solutions because it does not flex, absorb or leach. Class A carries a batch certificate and is what analytical work needs. Class B is roughly half as accurate and is the sensible choice for a school laboratory. Amber glass is for anything light sensitive.

Stoppers come in glass or plastic. Glass stoppers are ground to the individual flask, so keep each one with its own flask.

What is a glass volumetric flask?

A glass volumetric flask is a pear-shaped vessel with a long narrow neck carrying one etched ring. It is calibrated to contain a single exact volume at 20 °C, and the narrow neck is what makes that possible: a small change in volume shows as a large change in liquid height, so the mark can be judged to a fraction of a millilitre. Borosilicate glass holds a sharp calibration line, resists almost every common reagent and lets you read the meniscus clearly against the light.

Our range runs from 5 mL to 2 000 mL. Class A flasks ship with a batch certificate stating the measured tolerance, Class B costs less and suits teaching, and amber glass protects solutions that break down in daylight. Stoppers come ground in glass or moulded in plastic and PTFE.

    Standard solutions

    Weigh a primary standard, dissolve it in a little solvent, transfer it in and make up to the ring. Everything else in the analysis is then measured against a concentration you actually know.

    Accurate dilutions

    Pipette a measured volume of stock into the flask and fill to the mark. The dilution factor is exact, which is the whole basis of a reliable serial dilution.

    A titration is only as good as the solution it compares against. That solution is prepared in a volumetric flask first, which is why Class A glass belongs in any analytical titration.

    Light-sensitive reagents

    Silver nitrate, potassium permanganate and iodine solutions all decay in daylight. Amber glass blocks the wavelengths that break them down while the flask still measures exactly.
