What is CAPS Technology equipment?

Technology in the CAPS curriculum (Grades 7 to 9) has three content areas: Structures, Processing, and Systems and Control, the last split further into mechanical and electrical systems. A Practical Assessment Task asks learners to design, build, and test something against a real brief, not just follow a demonstration.

Every kit here is scoped to one of those content areas so it lines up with a specific PAT rather than being a generic craft project.

Common uses of CAPS Technology kits

  • Weights loaded on a wooden truss bridge model to test it

    Structures PAT

    Truss bridges and towers that get assembled and, in most cases, load tested against a stated brief.

  • A wooden model excavator arm on a classroom workbench

    Mechanical Systems PAT

    Syringe-powered hydraulic cranes and excavator arms that demonstrate force transferred through a fluid.

  • A circuit board with coloured wires and lit indicator lamps

    Electrical Systems PAT

    Battery-powered circuit boards wired to demonstrate one electrical principle at a time, within the GET band's 9V limit.

    Planning Across Grades

    Content areas rotate through the year, so most schools need kits from all three ranges across a Grade 7 to 9 term plan.
