Laboratory Tongs and Crucible Grips

Crucible tongs suit small, curved vessels; beaker and flask tongs suit wide-necked glassware; test tube holders suit narrow tubes. Using the wrong type, for example gripping a beaker with crucible tongs, gives a poor, unstable grip and increases the risk of a drop.

Stainless steel resists corrosion and holds up better to frequent high-temperature use and occasional exposure to reagent splashes, making it the better long-term choice for busy labs. Mild steel tongs are a lower-cost option suited to occasional classroom use where budget is the priority.

Longer tongs keep your hand further from a flame or furnace opening, which matters most for high-temperature furnace work. Shorter tongs give more precise control for delicate movements at the bench, such as positioning a crucible on a balance pan.

Before lifting anything hot, always practise the grip on a cold, empty vessel first to confirm the tongs hold it securely without slipping. A worn or bent spring joint loses tension over time and should be replaced before it fails during actual use.

Lifting a hot beaker or flask off a burner, hotplate or water bath without touching the glass. The curved jaws grip the body of the beaker rather than the rim, which stops it tipping as you lift.

Beaker (or flask) tongs have wide, padded jaws shaped to grip the cylindrical neck of a beaker or flask securely from the outside. Crucible tongs have narrower, bowed tips designed to reach down and cradle a smaller curved crucible from the sides or base. Using crucible tongs on a beaker, or beaker tongs on a crucible, gives an unstable grip and increases the risk of dropping the item.

Common uses include: lifting a hot crucible off a Bunsen flame or out of a furnace; carrying a heated beaker or flask off a hot plate; holding a test tube steady while heating it directly in a flame; transferring a hot item into a desiccator to cool; and retrieving small metal or glass objects from a hot water bath without scalding your hands.

Stainless steel tongs resist corrosion from most dilute acids and general lab reagents encountered during routine handling. Rinse tongs promptly if they contact any corrosive splash, and avoid prolonged submersion in strong acids, which will pit and weaken the metal over time regardless of grade.

Repeated high-temperature use gradually weakens the spring tension at the pivot joint, giving a looser grip over time. Inspect tongs periodically for a bent or worn joint, and replace any pair that no longer holds an item securely, since a slipping grip on a hot vessel is a genuine safety risk.

Wipe tongs down with a damp cloth after use and dry thoroughly to prevent rust, especially on mild steel versions. Store them hanging or laid flat in a dry drawer rather than piled with other sharp equipment, which can bend the arms out of alignment and affect the grip.
