Glass Burettes

A burette delivers liquid drop by drop and lets you read exactly how much you dispensed, which is what makes a titration possible. The stopcock at the bottom controls the flow, and the graduations up the barrel give the reading.

Class A is made to tighter tolerances and ships with a batch certificate. Class B is looser and cheaper, and fine for teaching work where the tolerance does not decide the result.



What is a glass burette?

Two things separate a good burette from a cheap one: the stopcock and the tolerance. A PTFE stopcock turns smoothly and does not seize the way a ground glass key can after it dries out. Rotaflow needle valves give the finest drop control of the three.

Tolerance is what Class A and Class B mean. Class A is manufactured to a tighter volume tolerance and ships with a batch certificate proving it. Class B is looser, cheaper, and perfectly adequate for teaching titrations.

Common uses of glass burettes in the lab

Glass burettes are the precision instrument of choice wherever accurate reagent delivery is required.

  • Acid-base titration

    A burette is the standard instrument for dispensing acid or base during titration. The analyst delivers reagent dropwise near the endpoint, reading the precise volume dispensed from the graduation markings to calculate concentration.

  • Redox and complexometric titration

    Burettes dispense oxidising agents such as potassium permanganate and potassium dichromate in redox titrations, and EDTA in complexometric titrations for water hardness and metal ion analysis.

  • Pharmaceutical volumetric assays

    Class A burettes are required for pharmacopoeial assays where accuracy is mandated by BP, USP, and EP standards. They are used in API content determination, potency testing, and standardisation of titrant solutions in quality control laboratories.

  • Industrial and environmental testing

    Environmental and industrial laboratories use burettes to standardise titrant solutions, measure dissolved oxygen, acidity, and alkalinity in water samples, and perform routine quality control assays on raw materials and finished products.
