What is a laboratory distillation setup?

A laboratory distillation setup is an assembled glassware system for separating liquid mixtures based on differences in boiling point. The core components are a round-bottom flask, a distillation head with a thermometer port, a condenser, and a receiving flask. These connect via ground-glass joints and are clamped on retort stands for stability.

Distillation is used to purify solvents, recover reaction products, separate crude mixtures, and determine the boiling point of unknown liquids. Common uses of laboratory distillation setups in the lab

  • Simple distillation

    A round-bottom flask, distillation head, Liebig condenser, and receiving flask separate liquids with boiling points more than 25 degrees C apart. Used daily to purify solvents such as ethanol, acetone, and ethyl acetate, and to recover distilled water from tap water.

  • Fractional distillation

  • Steam distillation

    Steam co-distils heat-sensitive essential oils and natural products that would decompose at their normal boiling point. The mixture distils below 100 degrees C and the oil separates from water in the receiving flask.

  • Vacuum distillation

    Reducing the pressure inside the system lowers the boiling point, allowing high-boiling-point compounds and heat-sensitive materials to be distilled at safe temperatures. A short-path distillation head and vacuum trap protect the pump from solvent vapour.
