This Soxhlet extraction apparatus with a coil condenser is the standard setup for continuously extracting lipids or bioactive compounds from solid materials with a volatile solvent.

Core Components

  • Boiling flask: A flat or round-bottom flask where the solvent is heated.
  • Soxhlet extractor body: The middle section that holds the thimble (containing your solid sample) and the siphon tube that drains solvent back into the flask automatically.
  • Coil condenser: Mounted on top to cool the solvent vapour. The internal glass coil gives a bigger cooling surface than a basic Liebig condenser.
  • Joints: Usually standard 24/29 or 24/40 ground glass joints for a vacuum-tight seal.

How the Extraction Works

  1. Vaporisation: The solvent in the flask is heated and the vapour rises through the extractor's side arm.
  2. Condensation: The vapour hits the coil condenser, turns back into liquid and drips onto the sample in the thimble.
  3. Soaking: The chamber fills with warm solvent, which dissolves the compounds you want from the solid.
  4. Siphoning: When the liquid reaches the top of the siphon tube, it drains back into the flask automatically, carrying the extract with it.
  5. Cycling: The process repeats on its own, concentrating the extract in the flask while fresh solvent keeps cycling.
