Spotting plates typically come with 6, 9, or 12 wells. A 6-well plate suits quick comparisons of a few reagents, while larger well counts are useful for running a full panel of qualitative tests or processing several samples in one pass without cross-contamination between wells.

A bright white glazed interior gives the best contrast for reading colour change reactions accurately, which matters most for subtle shifts between similar shades. This is why white porcelain, rather than clear glass, is the standard material for spotting plates used in qualitative colour tests.

Combustion boats come in a range of lengths. Measure your furnace chamber or tube furnace bore before ordering, and choose a boat that leaves clearance on all sides for even heat circulation around the sample during ignition or ashing.

Rinse spotting plates well between tests to prevent leftover reagent from one well contaminating the next result, particularly for sensitive colour-change tests. Glazed porcelain cleans easily with water, but dry each plate fully before storing to avoid water spots affecting future colour readings.

Porcelain combustion boats are designed for repeated high-temperature furnace cycles and can be loaded into a furnace that is already at temperature, provided you use long tongs and appropriate heat protection. Always allow the boat to cool gradually afterwards rather than plunging it into a cold surface or liquid.

Rinse spotting plates promptly with water after use to prevent reagents drying and staining the wells; a soft brush lifts any stubborn residue. Combustion boats should be allowed to cool fully before cleaning, then rinsed or gently scrubbed to remove ash; avoid thermal shock from rinsing a still-hot boat under water.
