Educational kits put everything for a practical into one box, so nobody is hunting for parts the night before a lesson. SmartLabs supplies South African schools with three ranges: ChemStart physical science kits for Grades 10 to 12, CAPS technology project kits for the Grade 7 to 9 PAT, and electric circuit kits for classroom electricity work.

Each range follows what the curriculum asks learners to do. The technology kits cover the briefs schools set most often: mine shaft headgear, hydraulic cranes, bridges, alarm circuits and sensor lights. The circuit kits carry the bulbs, holders, switches and leads a class works through in a term. If you are not sure which range fits, buy by grade first. That answers most of it.

What is an educational kit?

An educational kit is a packaged set of parts and instructions for one specific practical or project. Rather than ordering a bulb here and a switch there, a teacher gets the whole activity in a single box, sized for a school budget and matched to a curriculum outcome.

SmartLabs splits its kits three ways. ChemStart kits cover Grade 10 to 12 physical science, with the apparatus and chemicals for a term of prescribed experiments. Technology project kits cover the Grade 7 to 9 PAT, where a learner builds a working model such as a crane, a bridge or an alarm. Electric circuit kits sit across both phases and get used from primary school upward.

    The Practical Assessment Task asks learners to build something that works. The technology kits cover the briefs schools set most often: headgear, cranes, bridges, towers and alarm circuits. Everything needed for one model is in the box, so a learner is not sent to three shops the week before the deadline.

    ChemStart kits carry the apparatus and chemicals for the Grade 10 to 12 prescribed experiments. A teacher opens one box instead of pulling a list together across several suppliers. They also suit a school restarting a practical programme after the lab has stood unused for a few years.

    Classroom electricity

    Circuit kits get more classroom use than anything else in the electricity section. Bulbs, holders, switches, leads and battery holders let a class wire series and parallel circuits, test conductors and build a simple motor. They come back out of the cupboard every year.

    Expo entries and after school clubs run on the same parts. A kit gives a learner a working starting point they can change, extend or rebuild. The sensor and alarm kits in particular tend to become the base for something more ambitious.
