What is a laboratory desiccator?
A laboratory desiccator is a sealable glass vessel used to store chemicals, samples, and freshly fired crucibles in a dry, controlled atmosphere. The vessel contains a desiccant held on a perforated porcelain plate below the sample shelf. When the lid is sealed, the desiccant absorbs atmospheric moisture, maintaining a low-humidity environment that protects hygroscopic materials from absorbing water.
Desiccators are indispensable for gravimetric analysis, where even milligram moisture uptake affects results, and for storing reactive or moisture-sensitive compounds between uses. Vacuum desiccators include a stopcock on the dome so the interior can be evacuated to remove dissolved solvents and residual moisture from samples more rapidly. SmartLabs stocks 150 mm to 300 mm borosilicate glass desiccators with porcelain plates and ground-glass lids.
