What is a plastic Petri dish?

A plastic Petri dish is a shallow, flat-bottomed circular dish with a loosely fitting lid, made from polystyrene (PS) or polypropylene (PP). It is the standard vessel for culturing bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms on solid agar media in microbiology. Plastic Petri dishes are lighter and safer than glass, and disposable PS dishes allow single-use sterile workflows without autoclaving. PP Petri dishes can be autoclaved and reused in applications that require repeated sterilisation.

    Petri dishes hold poured agar plates for culturing bacteria, fungi, and yeast. Inoculated plates are sealed with Parafilm or tape and incubated upside down to prevent condensation from dripping onto colonies. The transparent PS lid allows colony counting and observation without opening the dish.

    Seed germination

    A damp cotton wool or filter paper bed in a Petri dish creates a simple germination chamber for seeds. Students can observe root and shoot emergence over several days without disturbing the seedlings. The lid maintains humidity while the transparent dish allows daily observation.
