Plastic Volumetric Flasks

Polypropylene volumetric flasks do the same job as glass and survive being knocked off a bench. That makes them the practical choice for a school laboratory, for fieldwork, and for anything involving hydrofluoric acid or strong alkalis, both of which attack glass.

They are calibrated at 20 degrees Celsius like any volumetric flask, and the single ring on the neck works exactly the same way. Do not heat them. Polypropylene distorts permanently well below the temperature borosilicate tolerates, and a flask that has been warmed has lost its calibration whether or not it looks it.

Read the meniscus the same way you would in glass, at eye level, with the bottom of the curve on the ring.

What is a plastic volumetric flask?

A plastic volumetric flask does exactly what the glass version does, in moulded polypropylene rather than borosilicate. Same pear-shaped body, same long narrow neck, same single calibration ring, and the same rule that the bottom of the meniscus must sit on that ring at 20 °C. What changes is what happens when it hits the floor. Polypropylene bounces, which is why it belongs in a school laboratory and in a field sampling case.

It also survives two things that destroy glass: hydrofluoric acid and hot concentrated alkali both etch borosilicate, and neither touches polypropylene. The trade-offs are that plastic flasks are Class B accuracy, they scratch more easily than glass, and they cannot be heated.

Anywhere the flask is likely to be dropped, carried, or filled with something that attacks glass.

    Hot concentrated sodium hydroxide etches glass and hydrofluoric acid dissolves it outright. Polypropylene shrugs off both, so it is the only sensible vessel for either.
