Heating Mantles & Water Baths
Heating mantles and water baths are relied on in pharmaceutical synthesis, essential oil extraction, chemical research, industrial quality control, and analytical laboratory work across South Africa. Where a Bunsen burner or hotplate introduces risk or uneven heating, a heating mantle provides controlled, uniform heat directly to a round-bottom flask. SmartLabs stocks analogue and digital temperature-control heating mantles, combined heating and stirring units, digital water baths, and replacement probes, from R1450 for a digital water bath to R19,000 for a top-spec mantle with integrated magnetic stirrer.
How to choose the right heating equipment
Match the mantle capacity to your flask volume: a 500ml mantle fits a 500ml round-bottom flask. For straightforward heating tasks without temperature logging requirements, an analogue model is cost-effective and reliable. For pharmaceutical synthesis, reflux, and distillation work where precise temperature control is required, a digital model with a calibrated temperature probe is the correct choice. A water bath is the preferred option when gentle, even heating from all sides is needed, such as for reagent preparation, sample incubation, or quality control procedures at a fixed temperature.
Frequently asked questions
Are these suitable for pharmaceutical or industrial use?
Yes. Our digital heating mantles are used in pharmaceutical synthesis, essential oil processing, chemical research, and industrial R&D labs, not only in academic settings.
What is the difference between a heating mantle and a water bath?
A heating mantle cradles a flask and heats it directly. A water bath heats a liquid medium surrounding the container, providing gentler, more uniform temperature control suited to incubation and dissolution work.
Do your heating mantles have an integrated stirrer?
Several models do. These combined heating and stirring units allow simultaneous temperature control and magnetic stirring in a single piece of equipment.
