What is a laboratory condenser?
A laboratory condenser is a glass vessel designed to cool and liquefy vapours produced during distillation, reflux reactions, and other processes that generate steam or solvent vapour. The most common type — the Liebig condenser — consists of an inner glass tube surrounded by an outer water jacket; cooling water flows continuously through the jacket, removing heat from the vapour passing through the inner tube and condensing it back into liquid form.
Other types include the Graham (coil) condenser for efficient reflux, the Allihn (bulb) condenser for vigorous reflux reactions, the West condenser for compact setups, and the Dimroth condenser for high-efficiency cooling.
