Liebig Condenser with Jointed

A Liebig condenser, also known as a straight condenser, is the most basic water-cooled condenser, consisting of a straight inner glass tube surrounded by an outer jacket. While "Liebig" and "straight" are often used interchangeably, "straight condenser" can sometimes refer to any condenser with a linear path (like a West condenser), whereas "Liebig" specifically refers to the standard wide-jacket design.

A Liebig condenser is a good choice for simple distillation, where high-efficiency cooling isn't critical, and for separating liquids with reasonably high boiling points. It's the most economical and widely used option for general teaching and basic lab tasks, and works better than air condensers for low-boiling points, though double-surface condensers are preferred for extremely volatile solvents like ether.

Usage tips: always connect water to the lower port and let it exit from the upper port, so the jacket stays completely full and heat exchange is maximised. For reflux (returning liquid to the flask), keep it vertical; for distillation (collecting product), mount it at a downward angle.
