A Liebig condenser, also known as a straight condenser, is the most basic water-cooled condenser, consisting of a straight inner glass tube surrounded by an outer jacket. While "Liebig" and "straight" are often used interchangeably, the term "straight condenser" can sometimes refer to any condenser with a linear path (like a West condenser), whereas "Liebig" specifically refers to the standard wide-jacket design.

When to choose a Liebig Condenser
  • Simple Distillation: Ideal for separating liquids with boiling points above
    where high-efficiency cooling isn't critical.
  • Space/Budget: It is the most economical and widely used for general teaching and basic lab tasks.
  • Low-Boiling Solvents: Better suited for very low-boiling points compared to air condensers, though double-surface condensers are preferred for extremely volatile solvents like ether.
Usage Tips
  • Coolant Direction: Always connect water to the lower port and exit from the upper port. This ensures the jacket is completely full, maximizing heat exchange.
  • Vertical vs. Angled: For reflux (returning liquid to the flask), keep it vertical. For distillation (collecting product), mount it at a downward angle.
