What is a plastic beaker

What is a plastic beaker?

A plastic beaker is an open-top cylindrical vessel made from polypropylene (PP) or polymethylpentene (TPX), designed for measuring, mixing, and transferring liquids in a laboratory or classroom setting. Where glass beakers are fragile, plastic beakers are shatterproof, lightweight, and safer in teaching labs where accidental drops are unavoidable.

Plastic beakers are not calibrated for precise volume measurement: the moulded graduation lines give an approximate reading only. For accurate measurement, use a calibrated plastic measuring cylinder. SmartLabs stocks PP beakers in sizes from 50 ml to 5 000 ml, covering the standard school kit sizes as well as larger volumes for buffer preparation and bulk rinsing.

Common uses of plastic beakers in the lab

Plastic beakers are the workhorse of the teaching lab and routine chemistry bench.

  • Plastic beakers classroom experiments

    Classroom experiments

Shatterproof construction makes plastic beakers the default choice for school science labs. Learners can safely measure approximate volumes, mix indicator solutions, and observe reactions without the risk of broken glass cutting through a busy classroom session.

  • Plastic beakers mixing reagents

    Mixing and diluting reagents

Plastic beakers serve as the go-to mixing vessel for preparing buffer solutions, diluting stock reagents, and combining liquids before transfer to more precise glassware. The wide opening and moulded spout make pouring and stirring quick and clean, even when wearing gloves.

  • Plastic beakers biological sample handling

    Biological sample handling

In biology and microbiology labs, plastic beakers hold staining solutions, transport specimens, and contain water for incubation baths. Polypropylene is compatible with most biological stains and does not leach ions that could interfere with cell cultures or enzymatic assays.

  • Plastic beakers waste collection

    Waste and catch collection

During filtration, titration, and extraction procedures, a plastic beaker placed beneath the apparatus collects waste solvents and rinse solutions safely. The shatterproof body eliminates the risk of a glass breakage in an already cluttered setup where a dropped container could cause a spill cascade.
