What is a plastic burette?

A plastic burette is a long graduated tube with a precision stopcock at the base, made from acrylic (PMMA), used to dispense measured volumes of liquid during titrations and other volumetric analyses. Plastic burettes are an alternative to glass where breakage is a concern, or where the titrant is incompatible with glass joints, such as hydrofluoric acid solutions and strongly alkaline liquids that etch glass over time.

Common uses of plastic burettes in the lab

Plastic burettes serve essential roles across a wide range of laboratory and teaching applications.

  • Acid-base titrations

    Dispense standard acid or base solutions precisely during school and university titration experiments. The graduated acrylic tube lets you read the meniscus clearly while the PTFE stopcock delivers smooth, controllable flow without the joint seizure common in glass stopcocks.

  • Redox titrations

    Deliver potassium permanganate, iodine, and other oxidising titrants without the staining or joint seizure issues associated with glass. Acrylic and PP burettes are resistant to these titrants and can be cleaned easily between runs.

  • Precipitation titrations

    Dispense silver nitrate or EDTA solutions for complexometric and precipitation analyses. Plastic burettes avoid the photochemical darkening of glass by silver nitrate and resist the alkaline pH that attacks glass stopcocks over time.

  • Teaching and demonstration

    A robust and safe alternative to glass for classroom volumetric experiments. Learners can practise titration technique and stopcock control without the risk of a broken burette ending the lesson.
