Laboratory Pipettes

A pipette moves a measured volume of liquid from one container to another. Volumetric pipettes deliver one fixed volume to Class A or Class B tolerance, which is what titration work calls for. Graduated and serological pipettes let you draw off any volume up to their capacity. Pasteur and transfer pipettes are for moving liquid where the exact amount does not matter. What is a laboratory pipette?

A laboratory pipette draws up a liquid and delivers a known volume of it somewhere else. Nobody pipettes by mouth any more: a bulb, pump or built-in plunger does the suction. Volumetric pipettes deliver one fixed volume very accurately, graduated and serological pipettes measure any volume up to their capacity, and Pasteur pipettes simply move drops.

    Titrations

    A Class A volumetric pipette delivers a precise portion of the solution being analysed into a conical flask, ready for the burette. How accurately you measure that first volume limits how accurate the whole titration can be.

    Transferring samples

    Pasteur and transfer pipettes move small amounts of liquid where the exact volume doesn't matter, like adding a drop of stain to a microscope slide or indicator to a flask. Plastic ones are cheap enough to use once and throw away.

    Microlitre dosing

    Adjustable micropipettes with disposable tips measure volumes far smaller than a glass pipette can. That makes them standard kit in microbiology, molecular biology and clinical testing, where a few microlitres either way changes the result.

    Safe filling

    Rubber pipette bulbs and pipette pumps take the place of mouth pipetting. A three-valve bulb lets you draw, hold and release liquid with one hand, while a thumbwheel pump gives finer control for graduated work.
