A Class B Graduated Pipette (Serological Type) is a standard laboratory instrument used to measure and transfer variable volumes of liquid. Unlike the highly precise Class A versions, Class B pipettes allow for a wider error tolerance (typically twice that of Class A) and are commonly used in educational or general industrial settings.

Key Technical Specifications
  • Accuracy: Calibrated to Class B standards, typically following DIN ISO 835 or ASTM E-1044.
  • Design Type: Serological, meaning graduations extend all the way down to the tip (jet). They are intended for "blow-out" use, where the last drop remaining in the tip is expelled using a pipette bulb or filler.
  • Material: Most high-quality reusable models are made from 3.3 Borosilicate Glass, which is autoclavable and highly resistant to chemical corrosion.
  • Markings: Often printed in a permanent amber stain that is diffused into the glass surface for high visibility and durability.

Capacity and Tolerance (Omsons/Standard Examples)

Class B pipettes are typically available in capacities ranging from 0.1 mL to 25 mL.

Specifications:

  • Capacity: Available from 0.01mL up to 25mL
  • Material: 3.3 Borosilicate Glass
  • Compliance with DIN ISO 835 standard.
  • Accuracy as per Class 'B'.
  • Amber (may be Blue) graduations, bright and unalterable.
  • These pipettes are graduated to deliver from any graduation line down to zero at the jet , with the last drop blowout.
  • Brand: OMSONS
  • Product of India
Comparison: Serological vs. Mohr Pipettes
It is important to distinguish these from Mohr Pipettes, which are also graduated but have a different design:
  • Serological: Graduations go to the tip; used for variable volume transfers; must be blown out.
  • Mohr: Graduations stop before the tip; used to deliver volume between two marks; the liquid in the tip is not part of the measured volume.
Usage Best Practices
  1. Selection: Choose the smallest capacity pipette that can handle your volume (e.g., use a 5 mL pipette for a 4 mL transfer) to minimize measurement error.
  2. Cleaning: Avoid using abrasive brushes inside the tip, as scratches can change the "blow-out" volume.
  3. Bulbs: Always use a safety pipette filler or bulb; never mouth pipette, especially with the "blow-out" technique.
