A Class B graduated pipette (serological type) is a standard laboratory instrument used to measure and transfer variable volumes of liquid. Unlike the highly precise Class A versions, Class B pipettes allow a wider error tolerance, typically twice that of Class A, and are commonly used in educational or general industrial settings.

They're calibrated to Class B standards, typically following DIN ISO 835 or ASTM E-1044. Being a serological design, graduations extend all the way down to the tip (jet), and they're intended for "blow-out" use, where the last drop remaining in the tip is expelled with a pipette bulb or filler. Most high-quality reusable models are made from 3.3 Borosilicate Glass, which is autoclavable and highly resistant to chemical corrosion, often printed in a permanent amber stain diffused into the glass surface for high visibility and durability.

Class B pipettes are typically available in capacities ranging from 0.1mL to 25mL.

It's worth distinguishing these from Mohr pipettes, which are also graduated but have a different design. Serological pipettes have graduations that go to the tip, are used for variable volume transfers, and must be blown out. Mohr pipettes have graduations that stop before the tip, are used to deliver volume between two marks, and the liquid remaining in the tip isn't part of the measured volume.

Choose the smallest capacity pipette that can handle your volume (e.g. use a 5mL pipette for a 4mL transfer) to minimise measurement error. Avoid abrasive brushes inside the tip when cleaning, since scratches can change the blow-out volume, and always use a safety pipette filler or bulb rather than mouth pipetting, especially with the blow-out technique.
