The OMSONS Clevenger Apparatus for oils lighter than water is a laboratory assembly used to extract and measure volatile oils from plant material by steam distillation.

Components and Key Features

The complete assembly includes:

  • Boiling Flask: 1000 ml Round Bottom Flask with a 24/29 ground glass joint.
  • Condenser: 300 mm Liebig Condenser with a matching 24/29 joint.
  • Clevenger Receiver/Extractor (25 ml): A graduated trap designed for "light" oils.
    • Light Return Mechanism: A return arm lets the heavier water phase flow back into the boiling flask while the lighter essential oil collects on top.
  • Material: Made from Borosilicate 3.3 heat-resistant glass with low thermal expansion.

How it Works

  1. Extraction: Steam carries volatile oil vapours from the boiling plant material up into the assembly.
  2. Condensation: The vapours are cooled in the Liebig condenser and drip into the graduated receiver.
  3. Separation: Since the oil is less dense than water, it forms a distinct top layer. The water below overflows through a side conduit back into the flask for continuous recycling.
  4. Measurement: After distillation, read the oil volume directly from the graduated receiver.
