Mine headgear is the structure standing over the shaft on every gold mine on the Reef, and this kit builds one that works. A braced tower on a base board, a winding drum with a crank at the bottom, string running up over the top of the tower, and a cage that rides up and down the middle of it.

Turn the handle and the cage comes up. That is the whole point, and it is why this build tends to mark better than a static model.

What your learner works with

  • A braced frame tower with X bracing on every face
  • A winding drum and crank, so the model covers a mechanism as well as a structure
  • String running over the head of the tower to lift the cage
  • A cage that has to run free in the shaft without catching on the bracing
  • Real friction to solve, because a drum that binds will not lift anything

It covers Structures and Mechanical Systems and Control in CAPS Technology, Grades 7 to 9, and it is one of the most commonly set PAT briefs in the country. If your learner has been given a mining or headgear topic, this is the kit.

Note: tools, glue and paint are not included.
