A burette is a graduated glass tube with a tap at one end, for delivering known volumes of a liquid, especially in titrations. It is a long, graduated glass tube, with a stopcock at its lower. The flow of liquid from the tube to the burette tip is controlled by the stopcock valve.

A Class 'B' Burette with a Straight Bore and Glass Key is the standard workhorse for general laboratory titrations and educational environments. Unlike the Rotaflow models, these use a traditional ground-glass stopcock.

Key Characteristics
  • Accuracy: Conforms to ISO 385 Class B standards. The tolerance for a 50mL unit is typically ±0.10 mL, which is double the margin of error of a Class A burette (±0.05 mL).
  • Stopcock (Glass Key): Features a precision-ground glass plug.
    • Note: These require stopcock grease (silicone or petroleum-based) to prevent leaking and to keep the glass from "freezing" or seizing up.
  • Graduations: Typically feature permanent blue or white enamel markings for easy reading.
  • Material: Made from Borosilicate 3.3 glass, providing excellent resistance to chemical corrosion (especially acidic solutions).

Comparison: Glass Key vs. PTFE Needle Valve

Feature Glass Key (Straight Bore) PTFE Rotaflow/Needle Valve
Lubrication Required (Grease) Not Required (Self-lubricating)
Chemical Resistance Excellent Superior (PTFE is inert to almost all chemicals)
Maintenance High (must be cleaned and re-greased) Low
Cost Generally more affordable Slightly more expensive
