OMSONS L-Shape Spreaders (also known as "hockey stick" spreaders) are precision laboratory tools designed for the uniform distribution of liquid cultures across the surface of agar plates. These are primarily used in microbiology for the "spread plate" technique.
 
Product Variations
 
OMSONS offers two main types of L-spreaders to suit different laboratory sterilization protocols:
  • Reusable Glass Spreaders: Manufactured from high-quality Borosilicate 3.3 glass. These can be sterilized by flaming with a Bunsen burner or by autoclaving.
    • Design: Features a smooth, rounded surface to prevent gouging or cutting the agar medium during use.
    • Price: Typically sold in packs of 10 for approximately R 185.00 in South Africa.
  • Disposable Plastic Spreaders: Often made from Polystyrene (PS) or Polypropylene (PP). These are supplied individually wrapped and pre-sterilized (usually via gamma radiation or E-beam), eliminating the need for autoclaving. 
 
Technical Specifications
  • Handle Length: Approximately 144 mm to 150 mm.
  • Spreading Blade Width: Approximately 33 mm to 37 mm, suitable for standard 9 cm and 10 cm petri dishes.
  • Angle: Standard L-shape, though some specialized versions feature a 100° or 120° angle to facilitate easier spreading across the entire plate surface. 
 
Key Applications
  • Bacterial Inoculation: Evenly spreading bacterial or cell cultures to ensure separate colony growth.
  • Sterile Technique: The glass version is ideal for traditional sterile techniques using 70% ethanol and a flame.
  • Sensitivity Testing: Used in preparing plates for antibiotic disc diffusion tests.
