A Glass Bunsen Burner (Spirit Lamp) is a self-contained heating tool used as a portable alternative to gas-powered Bunsen burners. It is primarily used for light-duty heating, flame sterilization of microbiology tools, and laboratory demonstrations where natural gas is unavailable.

Core Components.
  • Reservoir: A glass container, typically holding 60mL to 150mL, that stores the liquid fuel.
  • Wick: A cotton or ceramic fiber cord that draws fuel upward through capillary action.
  • Cap/Snuffer: A glass or metal cover used to extinguish the flame by cutting off the oxygen supply.
Recommended Fuels
For a clean, soot-free flame, use alcohols with 90% concentration or higher:

  • Denatured Alcohol (Methylated Spirits): The most common and cost-effective choice.
  • Ethanol: Produces the cleanest flame and is preferred for safety in some laboratory settings.
  • Isopropanol (Isopropyl Alcohol): Can be used but may produce more soot if the concentration is below 90%

Safety & Maintenance
  • Filling: Only fill the reservoir between 1/4 and 2/3 full. Filling it more can cause spills, while filling it less can lead to hazardous vapor buildup.
  • Extinguishing: Always use the snuffer cap. Never blow on the flame, as this can cause hot alcohol to splash.
  • Storage: If the lamp won't be used for several hours, return the fuel to its original container. The caps are rarely airtight, leading to fuel evaporation.
  • Inspection: Always check for cracks or chips in the glass before lighting; heat can cause a damaged vessel to shatter.
