A round-bottom boiling flask with an angular socketed Three-neck is a standard piece of lab equipment. The three-necks with ground glass joints enable complex experimental setups, allowing for the connection of multiple pieces of glassware simultaneously.
Features:
- Dual functionality: A key advantage over single-neck flasks is the ability to connect two components at once, such as a condenser for reflux and a dropping funnel for the controlled addition of reagents or a thermometer pocket (probe) to measure the temperature of the substance.
- Temperature monitoring: A thermometer or temperature probe can be inserted via the angled neck (often using an adapter or "thermometer pocket," which is a glass jacket designed to securely hold the thermometer) to accurately measure the internal temperature of the substance without compromising the sealed system.
- Material: Borosilicate glass 3.3, which offers excellent resistance to heat, chemicals, and thermal shock, allowing for direct heating with a mantle or open flame.
- Design: The spherical bottom provides uniform heating and greater stability under vacuum, as the stress is more evenly distributed across the surface compared to a flat bottom flask.
- Neck: The single neck features an outer ground glass joint (socket) at the opening.
- Joint Sizes: The ground glass joints come in standardized sizes, designated by a diameter and height measurement (e.g., 19/26, 24/29, 24/40, 29/32), ensuring interchangeability with other standard laboratory equipment.
- Capacity: These flasks are available in a variety of capacities, ranging from small sizes like 25 mL or 50 mL to much larger volumes of 5000 mL (5 L) and more.
- Stability: Due to their round base, they cannot stand on their own and require the use of a cork ring or a specialized flask stand/clamp for support when not part of an assembled apparatus.
Common Applications:
- Distillation: Used as the distilling flask or receiving flask in distillation setups.
- Reflux: Serves as the reaction vessel when a condenser is attached for a reflux procedure.
- Rotary Evaporators: Often used as the distilling flask in rotary evaporators to remove solvents.
- Chemical Reactions: Ideal for general heating, mixing, and reactions where an airtight seal is necessary to contain vapors or maintain an inert atmosphere.
