Distilling Head glass Claisen distillation adapter, a piece of laboratory glassware used in distillation and reaction setups. A Claisen Distillation Adapter is a multi-purpose "Y-shaped" glass connector that adds an extra vertical neck to a distillation setup. This design is essential for complex reactions where you need to monitor temperature while simultaneously adding reagents or using a mechanical stirrer.

  • Joints: Typically equipped with three or four ground glass joints (e.g., 24/29 or 14/23):
    • Bottom (Cone): Connects to the boiling flask.
    • Direct Vertical (Socket): Used for a dropping funnel, stirrer, or addition tube.
    • Second Vertical (Socket): Used for a thermometer adapter.
    • Angled Side-arm (Cone): Connects to the condenser.
  • Material: High-quality Borosilicate Glass 3.3 for maximum thermal shock and chemical resistance. 
Core Applications
  • Vigorous Boiling Control: The extra "neck" acts as a buffer to prevent liquid from splashing directly into the condenser (anti-splash).
  • Vacuum Distillation: Ideal for setups requiring a capillary tube to be inserted into the boiling flask to prevent "bumping" under reduced pressure.
  • Simultaneous Access: Allows the chemist to add liquids through a dropping funnel without stopping the distillation or removing the thermometer. 
Usage Tips
  • Vapour Path: Place the thermometer in the neck closest to the angled side-arm to get the most accurate reading of the vapours actually entering the condenser.
  • Safety: Because Claisen adapters are top-heavy, ensure the boiling flask and the condenser are both independently supported by retort stands and clamps.
  • Sealing: Apply a light coating of vacuum grease to all joints to ensure an airtight seal, especially during vacuum-assisted experiments.
