AA Battery - Generic

Zinc-carbon AA battery. The carbon zinc battery uses a zinc anode, a manganese dioxide cathode, and an electrolyte of zinc chloride dissolved in water. Powdered carbon is used in the cathode mix, usually in the form of carbon black to improve conductivity of the mix and for moisture retention.

They are still useful in low-drain or intermittent-use devices such as remote controls, low-power flashlights, clocks or transistor radio, but perform poorly in devices such as high-lumen flashlights, digital cameras, and portable CD players.
