Essential Oil Determination Apparatus (Clevenger Apparatus)

The OMSONS Essential Oil Determination Apparatus (Clevenger Apparatus) for oils lighter than water  is a specialized laboratory assembly used to extract and measure volatile oils from plant materials via steam distillation. 

Components and Key Features

• Boiling Flask: 1000 ml Round Bottom Flask with a 24/29 ground glass joint.
• Condenser: 300 mm Liebig Condenser with a matching 24/29 joint.
• Clevenger Receiver/Extractor: A graduated trap (usually 5 ml or 10 ml) specifically designed for "light" oils.
  • Light Return Mechanism: It features a return arm that allows the heavier water phase to automatically flow back into the boiling flask while the lighter essential oil collects on top.
• Material: Made from high-quality Borosilicate 3.3 heat-resistant glass with low thermal expansion. 

1. Extraction: Steam carries volatile oil vapors from the boiling plant material up into the assembly.
2. Condensation: The vapors are cooled in the Liebig condenser and drip into the graduated receiver.
3. Separation: Since the oil is less dense than water, it forms a distinct top layer. The water below overflows through a side conduit back into the flask for continuous recycling.
4. Measurement: After distillation is complete, the oil volume can be read directly from the graduated receiver.
