For any student or beginner entering a chemistry lab, a pair of Safety Beaker Tongs with plastic grips is one of the most important tools for preventing accidents. Unlike standard utility tongs, these are specifically engineered to handle the wide, cylindrical shape of beakers, especially when they are dangerously hot or contain reactive chemicals.
 
Design and Functional Features
The "entry-level" robust, straightforward design made of zinc-plated steel, characterized by:
  • Plastic-Coated Jaws (The "Safety" Grip): The jaws are sleeved in a heat-resistant plastic or vinyl. This provides a "soft" touch that won't scratch or stress the glass, while the high-friction surface prevents the beaker from slipping—even if the glass is wet or covered in condensation.
  • Large Circular Jaws: The jaws are curved into a wide arc, allowing them to wrap almost entirely around the body of a beaker. Most entry-level tongs are designed to fit standard 50mL to 2000mL beakers.
  • Scissor-Action Design: These tongs use a simple pivot point with large finger loops, giving the user precise control over the amount of pressure applied to the glass.
Why They Are Essential
  • Heat Protection: They allow you to safely move a beaker from a hot plate or Bunsen burner setup without bringing your hands near the heat source.
  • Chemical Safety: In the event of a minor spill on the outside of the beaker, the tongs allow you to manipulate the vessel without direct skin contact.

Proper Usage Tips
  1. Check the Sleeves: Before use, ensure the plastic grips are not charred or slipping off. If the metal is exposed, the tongs can easily slide off the glass.
  2. Avoid Direct Flame: While the metal is heat-resistant, the plastic grips can melt if held directly in a Bunsen burner flame. Always grip the beaker away from the direct fire.
  3. Center the Load: Always grip the beaker around its middle (the "waist") rather than near the very top rim to ensure the best center of gravity.
