A high-wall, or tall-form, porcelain crucible is used to minimize material loss during intense heating procedures, especially when reactions produce smoke, fumes, or gas. The taller, narrower shape is designed to contain volatile substances and prevent them from escaping, which is critical for accurate quantitative analysis.

Key applications and benefits

  • Minimizing sample loss: The primary reason for using a high-form crucible is to contain the contents during heating. Many experiments, such as gravimetric analysis, require that the mass of a sample be precisely measured after being subjected to high temperatures. The tall walls prevent the sample from sputtering out or being carried away by airflow, ensuring a more accurate final measurement.
  • Combustion and ashing: For experiments that involve burning off organic material to determine ash content, a high-walled crucible is ideal. The deep form allows sufficient space for the reaction to occur and prevents light, fluffy ash from being lost.
  • Controlling the reaction environment: The tall sides, particularly when used with a lid, help control the atmosphere inside the crucible. This is important for preventing external contaminants from entering and for slowing down the rate of evaporation during heating.
  • Sustaining high temperatures: Like all porcelain crucibles, the high-form version is chemically inert and can withstand temperatures up to 1050°C (1900°F) or higher. This makes them suitable for calcination, fusion, and other processes requiring intense heat.
  • Evaporation and concentration: In some cases, a high-walled crucible can be used for evaporating liquids, as the height of the walls helps to contain the liquid and prevent it from boiling over. For a faster rate of evaporation, however, a lower-form crucible is generally preferred.
