Location: Upper molars are the teeth located at the back of the upper jaw, used primarily for grinding food.

Root Structure:
The first and second upper molars generally have three separate roots:
  • Mesiobuccal root: Located towards the cheek and the front of the mouth.
  • Distobuccal root: Located towards the cheek and the back of the mouth.
  • Palatal (or lingual) root: Located towards the palate (roof of the mouth) and is typically the largest of the three.
Function:
These three roots provide strong anchorage for the tooth in the jawbone, allowing it to withstand the forces generated during chewing.

Pulp Cavity:

The sensitive tissue directly underneath the enamel is called dentineThe space in a tooth bounded by the dentin and containing the dental pulp. The portion of the cavity within the crown of the tooth is the pulp chamber; the portion within the root is the pulp canal or root canal. This critical cavity contains the nerves and blood supply that keep the teeth alive.

A cavity in the pulp cavity, also known as pulpitis, occurs when tooth decay progresses and reaches the soft inner tissue of the tooth, called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. This can cause pain, sensitivity, and inflammation, potentially leading to a tooth abscess if left untreated.

Variations:
While three roots are typical for the first and second upper molars, the third molar (wisdom tooth) may exhibit variations, sometimes having fused or fewer roots.
