Buchner Flask (Filter Flask)

A Buchner flask, also known as a filter flask, vacuum flask, suction flask, side-arm flask, Kitasato flask or Bunsen flask, is a thick-walled Erlenmeyer flask with a short glass tube and hose barb protruding from its neck. A thick-walled flexible hose fits over the hose barb, and the other end of the hose connects to a source of vacuum such as an aspirator, vacuum pump or house vacuum.

The thick wall gives the flask the strength to withstand the pressure difference while it holds a vacuum. It is mainly used for filtration together with a Büchner funnel, fitted at the neck through a drilled rubber bung or an elastomer adapter (a Büchner ring). A layer of filter paper in the funnel keeps the sample isolated from the suction. During filtration the filtrate collects in the flask and the residue remains on the filter paper.

The flask can also be used as a vacuum trap in a vacuum line, so that no fluids are carried over from the vacuum source to the evacuated apparatus or the other way round.
