A loop-carrier (or inoculation loop carrier) is a specialized handle used in microbiology to hold and manipulate metal inoculation loops or needles. It is an essential tool for the sterile transfer and streaking of microorganisms between culture media.
Key Specifications
- Material: Usually made from nickel-plated brass, aluminum, or brass.
- Insulation: Often features a PVC or plastic handle to protect the user from heat during flame sterilisation.
- Length: A standard professional carrier is approximately 200mm (8 inches) long.
- Turret/Chuck: The tip features a small screw-top or clamping mechanism (turret) to securely hold interchangeable Nichrome or Platinum wires.
Function & Use
- Mounting: A metal wire loop is inserted into the carrier's turret and tightened.
- Sterilisation: The wire loop is held by the carrier and passed through a Bunsen burner flame until it glows red hot.
- Inoculation: After cooling for a few seconds, the loop is used to pick up a bacterial colony and streak it onto an agar plate or dip it into a broth.
- Re-sterilisation: The loop is flamed again after use to kill any remaining microorganisms before storage.
Comparison: Loop-Carrier vs. Disposable Loops
While a carrier is used for reusable metal loops, many labs also use disposable plastic loops which do not require a separate carrier handle.
