A volumetric flask measures one volume, once, very accurately. It is a pear-shaped flask with a long narrow neck and a single graduation ring, and that shape is the whole point: a narrow neck means a large change in height for a small change in volume, so you can judge the mark to a fraction of a millilitre. A measuring cylinder cannot come close.

Use one whenever the concentration of a solution has to be known rather than estimated. Making up a standard solution, preparing a reagent for titration, diluting a stock solution to a fixed strength, or preparing samples for analysis all start with a volumetric flask.

Class A or Class B? Class A is the tighter tolerance and comes with a batch certificate stating it. Class B is roughly twice the tolerance and is perfectly good for teaching work. If the task is about accuracy, or a learner needs to see a certificate, buy Class A.

Every flask is calibrated to contain its stated volume at 20 °C. Let warm solutions cool before the final fill, and read the bottom of the meniscus at eye level.

What is a volumetric flask?
