A Thermometer Adapter is used to create a vacuum-tight, adjustable seal around a thermometer when you need to insert it into a distillation head or a flask.

For metal thermometer probes that will be submerged into ab aggressive acid we recommend using a Pocket Thermometer Adapter. Even "acid-resistant" stainless steel probes will eventually pit or degrade when submerged in hot, aggressive acids

Here is how you set it up and use it:

1. Assemble the Components
The adapter usually comes in three parts: a glass body with a ground joint (e.g., 14/23 or 19/26), a plastic screw cap, and a silicone or rubber ring (grommet).
  • Slide the plastic cap onto the thermometer.
  • Slide the rubber ring onto the thermometer after the cap.
2. Insert into the Adapter Body
  • Push the thermometer through the top of the glass adapter body.
  • Slide the thermometer up or down until the bulb is positioned exactly where you need it (usually just below the side-arm of a distillation head to measure the vapor temperature accurately).
3. Create the Seal
  • Screw the plastic cap onto the threaded top of the glass adapter.
  • As you tighten the cap, it compresses the rubber ring against the thermometer, creating a leak-proof and vacuum-tight seal.
4. Install the Assembly
  • Insert the ground glass joint of the adapter into your labware (like a Still Head).
  • Pro Tip: Apply a very thin layer of vacuum grease to the ground joint to ensure it doesn't "freeze" or leak under vacuum.
Important Safety Tips:
  • Don't Over-tighten: Tighten the cap just enough to stop the thermometer from sliding. Over-tightening can snap the thermometer or crack the glass threads.
  • Lubrication: If the thermometer is hard to slide through the rubber ring, use a drop of glycerin or water as a lubricant to avoid breaking the thin glass stem.
  • Check the Joint Size: Ensure your adapter’s joint (e.g., 14/23) matches the socket on your glassware.
