Ahlstrom Grade 601 qualitative filter paper is equivalent to Whatman Grade 1. It covers a wide range of laboratory applications, such as clarifying liquids, rapid filtration of coarser precipitates, soil analysis and seed testing.

This low ash grade contains more than 95% super refined alpha-cellulose and linter fibers. It is used for rapid filtration of coarser precipitates such as lead sulfate, lead chromate, calcium oxalate, calcium carbonate, aluminum phosphate, barium carbonate and beryllium hydroxide. It is also used in air pollution work to collect dust-laden air, and commonly in the food industry to separate foodstuffs from associated liquid or extracting liquid.

Characteristics: white, smooth surface, cotton. Grade 601 is particularly suitable for testing seed and roots appearance under fluorescent light.

How to choose the right filter paper size

Choose a paper about 1.5 to 1.8 times the funnel diameter. Folded into a cone (typically in quarters), it should sit inside the funnel with about 5 to 10 mm extending above the rim for easy handling.

What is filter paper used for?

Normal filter paper is a semi-permeable barrier used to separate components in a liquid flow or an air flow. It separates solids from liquids or gases by letting certain substances pass through while retaining others, and is commonly used in laboratories for filtration, sample preparation and analysis.
