This pear-shaped separating funnel (also called a separatory funnel) separates liquids that don't mix, such as oil and water. It's borosilicate glass with a glass key stopcock, a plastic stopper and a drip tip, in sizes from 50ml to 2 000ml with a 19/26 or 24/29 joint.

Shake the mixture with the stopper in, then stand the funnel in a ring and let the layers settle. The denser liquid sinks to the bottom, so you open the stopcock to drain off the lower layer and close it just as the boundary reaches the tap, leaving the upper layer behind. That makes it the standard tool for liquid-liquid extraction.

The ground glass joint at the top seals the funnel while you shake it and fits other glassware with the same joint size. In a joint size like 24/29, the first number is the diameter of the wide end in millimetres and the second is the length of the joint. The drip tip gives a narrow, controlled stream, so you can also use the funnel to add a reagent drop by drop.
