This generic AA battery is a zinc-carbon battery. It uses a zinc anode, a manganese dioxide cathode and an electrolyte of zinc chloride dissolved in water. Powdered carbon, usually in the form of carbon black, is used in the cathode mix to improve conductivity and for moisture retention.

Carbon zinc batteries are still useful in low-drain or intermittent-use devices such as remote controls, low-power flashlights, clocks or transistor radios, but perform poorly in devices such as high-lumen flashlights, digital cameras and portable CD players.
