These amber penny head stoppers with a ground joint give a light-protective, vacuum-tight seal for lab glassware. They're amberised to block UV and short-wavelength visible light (typically 300nm to 500nm), which protects light-sensitive chemicals.

Safe Autoclaving Guidelines

To avoid damaging the stopper or the vessel it fits, follow these guidelines:

  • Loosen the joint: Never autoclave a stopper that's firmly seated or greased in a joint. Thermal expansion can crack the glass or leave the stopper permanently stuck.
  • Venting: Leave a path for steam to get in and pressure to equalise. A common tip is to put a thin strip of paper between the ground glass surfaces, or rest the stopper loosely on top.
  • Standard cycles: They typically handle standard autoclave cycles (for example 121°C at 15 psi for 15 to 20 minutes).
  • Avoid rapid cooling: Don't move hot glassware straight into a cold environment or water, as even borosilicate glass can fail with a sudden, extreme temperature change.
