Cobalt Chloride Paper is a qualitative indicator used primarily in chemistry and biology to detect the presence of moisture, water, and relative humidity. In a standard school-grade container of 100 sheets (or strips), it provides a cost-effective and visual way for students to observe chemical hydration.

How the Color Change Works
The paper operates on the reversible hydration of Cobalt(II) chloride
:
  • Blue (Anhydrous): In dry conditions, the paper remains a deep sky blue.
  • Purple (Dihydrate): As it begins to absorb moisture, it transition through a purplish mid-phase.
  • Pink/White (Hexahydrate): When fully hydrated by direct liquid contact or high humidity (typically 50% RH or higher), it turns a distinct light pink or white.
  • Reversibility: The paper can be "reset" to blue by heating it gently in a warm oven (around 50°C) or by using a hair dryer to drive off the water molecules.

Primary School Experiments
  • Botanical Transpiration: Students often clip the paper to the upper and lower surfaces of a leaf to demonstrate that water vapour is primarily lost through the stomata on the underside.
  • Humidity Monitoring: It is used to test the relative humidity in different parts of a classroom or inside sealed containers.
  • Leak Detection: In physics and plumbing labs, strips are placed near joints to identify microscopic cracks or water intrusion patterns.

Storage & Handling
  • Keep Sealed: Because it is highly hygroscopic (moisture-absorbing), the container must remain tightly closed. Exposure to even 55% relative humidity is enough to cause a slow, unwanted color change.
  • Use Forceps: Moisture from your skin can trigger a color change; always handle the sheets with forceps or tweezers.
  • Safety: While used in schools, Cobalt(II) chloride is toxic if ingested. Students should wash their hands after use.
