A Coplin jar is a specialized, compact laboratory vessel, usually made of glass or plastic, designed to hold 5–10 microscope slides vertically for staining, fixing, or washing in histology, cytology, and microbiology. It features internal grooves for separating slides and a cap to prevent evaporation, allowing efficient, consistent staining with minimal reagents. 

These jars are essential tools for ensuring uniform staining and are used in laboratories for various staining and destaining applications. 

Key Aspects of Coplin Jars:

  • Purpose: Primarily used in staining procedures, such as hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, and for tissue section preparation.
  • Design: Cylindrical jars contain internal slots that keep slides upright. They are commonly used for (25 x 75 mm) slides.
  • Capacity: 5 Slides
  • Material: Durable Soda-Lime Glass resistant to most stains but less resistant to extreme thermal shock.
  • Closure: They come with either a screw-on cap (often plastic) or a glass lid to reduce evaporation and protect samples.
  • History: Designed by American pathologist William M. L. Coplin in the late 19th century.
