This distilling head with a Vigreux-style tube and Claisen-style layout (sometimes called a "thorn tube" head) is fractional distillation glassware. It combines a standard distilling head with a built-in Vigreux column of glass thorns.

Core Applications

  • Fractional distillation: Separates liquids with close boiling points. The thorns give a cooler surface where less volatile vapour condenses and drips back (reflux), while more volatile vapour passes through.
  • High-purity solvent recovery: Only the purest vapour reaches the condenser, leaving impurities in the flask.
  • Space-saving: Combines the fractionating column and distilling head in one compact unit.

Tips for Use

  • Insulation: For the best separation, wrap the thorned section in aluminium foil or a heating jacket to keep a steady temperature gradient.
  • Keep it vertical: Make sure the tube is exactly upright so the condensed liquid runs evenly over the thorns back into the flask.
  • Thermometer position: Place the thermometer bulb level with the side arm junction to read the vapour temperature just before it enters the condenser.
