This filter flask (Buchner flask) is a thick-walled Erlenmeyer flask in borosilicate 3.3 glass, with a short glass tube and hose barb at the neck for a vacuum hose. It is sold in six sizes from 250ml to 10000ml.

The same flask goes by several other names: vacuum flask, suction flask, side-arm flask, Kitasato flask or Bunsen flask.

How it is used

A thick-walled flexible hose fits over the hose barb, and the other end of the hose connects to an aspirator, a vacuum pump or a house vacuum. The thick wall is there so that the flask can hold a vacuum and withstand the pressure difference.

For filtration, a Buchner funnel is fitted at the neck through a drilled rubber bung or an elastomer adapter (a Buchner ring). A layer of filter paper in the funnel keeps the sample isolated from the suction. The filtrate is drawn into the flask and held there, and the residue remains on the filter paper.

The flask can also be used as a vacuum trap in a vacuum line, so that no fluids are carried over from the vacuum source to the evacuated apparatus, or the other way round.
