Filter Paper - Student Grade
Student grade filter paper is a type of qualitative filter paper designed for basic laboratory filtration tasks and educational purposes. It's typically used for separating solids from liquids or gases in qualitative analysis, where identifying or determining the presence of a substance is the primary goal, rather than accurately measuring its quantity. These papers are generally characterized by medium flow rates, medium retention, and moderate ash content, making them suitable for general lab work and educational applications.
Whatman Equivalent, Student Grade.
Key Characteristics:
Medium retention: They retain particles within a specific size range, allowing finer particles to pass through.
Medium flow rate: They allow liquids to pass through at a moderate speed.
Moderate ash content: They may leave behind a small amount of ash after burning, which is acceptable for qualitative analysis but not for quantitative analysis where very low ash content is required.
Ahlstrom 613: Another strong filter paper with medium flow and retention, also commonly used in educational settings.
Sample preparation: Preparing samples for further analysis.
Educational demonstrations: Demonstrating filtration techniques and principles in science education.
Student grade filter paper is generally not suitable for quantitative analysis where very low ash content is required. It's also not designed for use in vacuum filtration, where stronger, more wet-resistant paper is needed.
Filter funnel (mm)
Please note the below grid is a recommendation of what diameter filter paper is compatible with glass or plastic filter funnels.
Diameter of filter funnel (mm) | Diameter of filter paper required (mm) |
35 | 55 |
45 | 70 |
55 | 90 |
65 | 110 |
75 | 125 |
90 | 150 |
100 | 185 |
125 | 215 |
150 | 240 |
180 | 320 |
220 | 400 |
260 | 500 |
When folded into a cone (typically in quarters), it should fit inside the funnel with about 5–10 mm extending above the rim for easy handling.
What is filter paper used for?
Filter paper is used to separate solids from liquids or gases, acting as a semi-permeable barrier that allows certain substances to pass through while retaining others. It's commonly used in laboratories for various applications, including filtration, sample preparation, and analysis.
