Student grade filter paper is a type of qualitative filter paper designed for basic laboratory filtration tasks and educational purposes. It is typically used for separating solids from liquids or gases in qualitative analysis, where the goal is to identify whether a substance is present rather than to measure its quantity accurately.

Whatman Equivalent, Student Grade.

Key characteristics

  • Medium retention: retains particles within a specific size range and allows finer particles to pass through
  • Medium flow rate: liquids pass through at a moderate speed
  • Moderate ash content: may leave behind a small amount of ash after burning, which is acceptable for qualitative analysis but not for quantitative analysis where very low ash content is required

Common applications

  • General lab filtration: separating solid precipitates from solutions
  • Sample preparation: preparing samples for further analysis
  • Educational demonstrations: demonstrating filtration techniques and principles in science education

Not suitable for: quantitative analysis where very low ash content is required, or vacuum filtration, where stronger, more wet-resistant paper is needed.

Filter funnel (mm)

The grid below is a recommendation of what diameter paper is compatible with glass or plastic filter funnels.

Diameter of filter funnel (mm) Diameter of filter paper required (mm)
35 55
45 70
55 90
65 110
75 125
90 150
100 185
125 215
150 240
180 320
220 400
260 500

The paper should be about 1.5 to 1.8 times the funnel diameter. When folded into a cone (typically in quarters), it should fit inside the funnel with about 5 to 10 mm extending above the rim for easy handling.

What do the grades mean?

Filter papers are available in different grades, which indicate the level of particle retention. Lower grades (e.g. Grade 1) have larger pores, while higher grades (e.g. Grade 4) have finer pores. Thicker papers can hold more material, but they may also reduce flow rate.

What is it used for?

Filter paper is used to separate solids from liquids or gases, acting as a semi-permeable barrier that allows certain substances to pass through while retaining others. It is commonly used in laboratories for filtration, sample preparation and analysis.
