This flat bottom flask has a narrow neck with a rimmed opening, and is also known as a Florence flask. Unlike a round bottom flask, it stands on its own on a hot plate or bench without additional support.

It is used for heating in distillation or other reagent reactions. It is not as durable as a round bottom flask, but it does not have the sharp, vulnerable corners of an Erlenmeyer flask. The narrow neck minimises evaporation and reduces the risk of splashing during swirling.

The flask is made from borosilicate 3.3 glass for high thermal shock resistance and chemical durability, with a reinforced, fire-polished rim for chip resistance and a secure stopper fit. Sizes from 50ml to 2 000ml can be ordered online, and larger capacities up to 20L are supplied on request.

Flat and round bottom flasks are both used for heating, but they serve different purposes. Flat bottom flasks are best for storage, mixing and routine boiling on hot plates, and are easier to use in educational settings because they need no clamps or cork rings to stand. Round bottom flasks are preferred for distillation and reflux, since the spherical shape gives more uniform heat distribution and greater pressure resistance.
