Buchner filtering flasks is a specialized, heavy-walled conical flask designed for vacuum filtration. Unlike standard Erlenmeyer flasks, these are built with reinforced glass to withstand significant pressure differentials and feature a precision-ground socket and side tubulation for vacuum attachment.

The ground glass socket (joint) on a Buchner flask serves three specific functional purposes that a plain-neck flask cannot provide:
  1. Airtight Vacuum Seal: In vacuum filtration, maintaining a "leak-proof" environment is critical. A precision-ground glass joint (like a 24/29 size) creates a much tighter seal with a matching funnel than a simple rubber stopper or "bung" can provide.
  2. Rigidity and Alignment: Heavy Buchner funnels (especially ceramic ones filled with liquid) can be top-heavy. A jointed connection provides a stable, vertical lock that prevents the funnel from tilting or breaking the vacuum seal during the process.
  3. Contamination Prevention: Rubber stoppers can sometimes degrade or leach chemicals when exposed to harsh solvents. Using a glass-to-glass joint (often with a thin layer of PTFE or vacuum grease) ensures the entire flow path remains chemically inert.
This design allows the flask to become part of a modular "Quickfit" system, where condensers, separatory funnels, or other jointed glass components can be swapped in securely.

  • Integrated Tubulation: Features a side-arm (often 8mm-10mm OD) for connecting vacuum hoses, sometimes available with a PTFE tubulation for enhanced chemical resistance.
  • Precision Ground Socket: The top neck is finished with an interchangeable ground glass socket (e.g., 24/29) to ensure a leak-proof fit with Buchner funnels or other apparatus.
  • Thermal Tolerance: High resistance to thermal shock, with an annealing point of approximately 565°C
